Google Search Console reports impressions, clicks, queries, pages, and indexing information. Analytics tools explain what visitors do after arriving. Google recommends using Search Console and analytics together because they measure different parts of the journey.

SEO in the age of AI search
Search is expanding beyond lists of links. Google can present AI Overviews and AI Mode responses, while tools such as ChatGPT can search the web and cite source pages. You may hear this work called answer engine optimization (AEO) or generative engine optimization (GEO), but it is not a replacement for SEO.
Google’s guidance for AI features says the same SEO foundations remain relevant. A page must still be crawlable, indexed, eligible to appear with a snippet, and useful to people. Google does not require special AI schema, an AI-specific text file, or a separate set of technical tricks for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
What helps content work in AI search?
Start with the same qualities that make a page useful anywhere: answer the central question directly, use clear headings, explain important terms, support claims with evidence, show first-hand expertise, keep facts current, and connect related pages through descriptive links. Original examples, data, comparisons, and concrete experience give a source more value than a summary of information already available everywhere.
Semantic HTML and structured data can help machines interpret a page, but the markup must match what visitors can see. Structured data describes content; it does not make weak content authoritative or guarantee inclusion in an AI answer.
AI crawlers and robots.txt
“AI robots” are not all used for the same purpose. Website owners should decide separately whether they want visibility in AI-powered search and whether they permit content to be crawled for model training.
Surfaces websites in ChatGPT search results.
Allow or disallow it in robots.txt based on whether search visibility is wanted.
Crawls content that may be used to improve generative AI foundation models.
Can be controlled independently from OAI-SearchBot.

The distinction comes from the official OpenAI crawler documentation. Blocking GPTBot does not require blocking OAI-SearchBot, so a publisher can make an independent choice about model training while remaining eligible for ChatGPT search discovery.
Do you need an llms.txt file?
No major search engine requires one for AI search visibility. An llms.txt file can be maintained as an optional machine-readable navigation layer, but it should never replace crawlable HTML, internal links, sitemaps, or accurate structured data. The visible website remains the primary source of truth.

How long does SEO take to work?+
Some technical changes can be processed quickly, while meaningful visibility often takes months. Timing depends on crawl frequency, competition, site history, content quality, and the scope of the work. Google notes that changes can take anywhere from hours to several months to be reflected.
Can you pay Google for better organic rankings?+
No. Advertising can buy paid placements, but Google states that payment does not improve organic rankings or make a site get crawled more often.
Is SEO only about Google?+
No. The same foundations help other search engines and can improve discovery in any system that needs to understand and retrieve web content.
